What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic system designed to adjust the alignment of your teeth and jaw, giving you the optimal bite and a straight and confident smile. Through the use of clear plastic aligners, Invisalign applies gentle yet precise pressure to specific areas of the mouth, encouraging teeth to shift into the appropriate position as determined by your dentist.

How is Invisalign Different From Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces are compiled of brackets which are adhered directly to the teeth, and wires which need to be tightened every month or so. These metal components can be abrasive to the mouth’s delicate tissues, especially for particularly active patients.

Invisalign does not require any metal components and does not need to be bonded directly to the teeth. The aligners are made of clear plastic, which many patients find both more comfortable and more attractive as they are almost invisible to the naked eye.

The plastic aligners do not need to be tightened. Rather, patients are given new custom aligners as they proceed through their treatment plan to ensure their teeth continue to progress as the doctor intended.

Studies indicate that Invisalign may work faster than traditional braces, and could require fewer appointments for adjustments, fewer emergency appointments, and less time in the dentist’s chair overall.

Why Bite Alignment Matters

Some patients, particularly adults, find themselves hesitant to undergo any sort of orthodontic treatment, seeing their alignment issues as cosmetic rather than functional. The reality is that bite problems and malocclusions can have a significant impact on your overall health.

When the teeth are not properly aligned, they are more difficult to clean thoroughly. Without thorough cleaning, the teeth may start to decay. If dental decay is left unchecked, it may eventually lead to bone loss, heart disease, and other serious problems. An improper bite can also impact the longevity of your teeth. If teeth are not properly aligned, they may grind together in certain spots, causing them to wear down faster than normal.
